The AIA Leads The Future Of Architecture

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a membership organization of architects and designers established more than 150 years ago by 13 architects with a mission to promote and support architects and the field of architecture. AIA now has more than 90,000 architect and design members throughout the U.S. and three of its territories, Europe, Canada, and Asia.

The AIA is committed to building structures that create safe neighborhoods, but it is also deeply involved in the broader global community. The AIA has as one of its goals to reimagine the role of architects and designers and to lead AIA in that effort is the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Ivy.

Named to his post in 2011, Robert Ivy is highly credentialed and a passionate architect, who has embraced his role as the inspired and innovative leader of the organization. His vision has advanced the agenda of AIA specifically and the field of architecture in general. Ivy’s leadership strategy improved the governance and efficiency of the AIA Board of Directors. He spearheaded the development of a Strategic Council that “streamlined decision-making, new initiatives, and improved insight” for the AIA. Ivy convened a Design and Health Summit to explore the connection between architecture, design, and public health, a new and vital 21st-century architectural trend and he coordinated the launch of 30-second PSA ads to increase public awareness about architects and architecture.

Robert Ivy embraces emerging architectural trends and has positioned AIA as the premier global architectural organization. Some of the emerging architectural trends for the future include the use of compost for building materials and crowdfunding for architectural projects to raise awareness for green infrastructure projects. Other emerging trends include the design of energy efficient architecture and promoting collaboration of architects with, for example, scientists and social anthropologists to design environmentally friendly structures.

Robert Ivy works tirelessly to reframe the role of the AIA and to redirect AIA resources to stay abreast of new or emerging trends in the field. He promotes the values, mission, and vision of the AIA to keep AIA and its members relevant and at the forefront of architecture. Ivy’s education and experience ideally position him to lead AIA into the 21st century.
