The county was facing huge challenges with immigration, and Joe Arpaio decided to do something about it. Unfortunately, the actions he took were against human rights.

They included violation of human rights through torture, killings, and displacement of immigrants illegally. Hundreds of immigrants were held up in concentration camps where they were supposed to stay awaiting deportation to their countries of origin.

Human rights activists in the county led by journalist Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were excited that the arrest of the former Sheriff would finally bring closure to the people who suffered under his regime. Unfortunately, this did not happen as he received a pardon from his ally, the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Read more: Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund and Michael Lacey | LinkedIn

The two seems to have working chemistry. Earlier they had collaborated in raising the birth certificate issue of the Former President Barack Obama. Trump who at the time used Joe Arpaio to raise the issue seems to have rewarded him back with a pardon.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are direct victims of the illegal actions taken by Joe Arpaio. Through their media outlet “Phoenix New Times” the two exposed the former Sheriff for all the illegalities he committed. They went to the extent of publishing material exposing his home address which was unknown to the public.

He was angered by the steps taken by the media outlet and decided to get a secret subpoena for the arrest of the two journalists. After the arrest, the move backfired on him as public pressure piled up on him to release the two journalists. The arrest was described as an act of impunity and a violation of the freedom of speech.

Lacey and Larkin took this matter to court where it ordered they be paid $3.75 million in compensation for the illegal detention they went through. Clearly, no one would have loved to see Arpaio face justice as these two journalists. They have followed all the actions he did, and they know he is culpable of actions that could have seen him put behind bars if he was taken for a trial.

In a rather bizarre twist of the story, after the pardon of Joe Arpaio, Lacey and Larkin seem to be the ones in hot soup. The FBI has arrested the two on allegations of money laundering and sex-related crimes. The move by the federal government to arrest the two come two years after they sold the website in connection- Backpage.com.

In a swoop which involved the arrest of the two journalists alongside several other people related to the website, Backpage.com was also pulled down by the FBI. The two are now awaiting trial in June. Jim Larkin is still behind bars awaiting changes as he faces extra charges. This arrest has been criticized by the two through their lawyers terming it as discrimination and muzzling of the freedom of speech by the state.
